It would come as no surprise to Liverpool supporters if Divock Origi was sold by the club in January. The player himself may decide to move on with reports suggesting a transfer could happen – but surely he will need replacing?
With Euro 2021 on the horizon, Origi may feel he has to leave Liverpool to get game time elsewhere and show Roberto Martinez has deserves a place in the Belgium squad. ESPN claim Liverpool will be willing to listen to offers for Origi in January.
Despite the presence of Diogo Jota, Origi would need replacing if he left Anfield – and the perfect solution has just thrown itself at Liverpool’s door step, in the form of Atalanta powerhouse and Colombia international Duvan Zapata.
The 29-year-old striker has been sensational for Atalanta after initially joining the Serie A side on loan. Now, with 95 appearances for the club under his belt, Zapata has a whopping 52 goals and 21 assists to his name.
But his time at Atalanta looks as though it is coming to an end. CalcioMercato claim that Zapata – who featured against Liverpool in both the 5-0 win and 2-0 Anfield defeat – is ready to be sold and could even leave the club in the January window.
Atalanta rate Zapata at £45million – not bad for a striker that has speed, power, aerial ability and the stats to back it up. He also boasts creativity given his 1-in-4 ratio when it comes to assists. That price might even be knocked down in talks.
Surely then, if Origi does leave Liverpool – Michael Edwards should look no further than Zapata, who impressed against the Reds and is now available for a transfer next month, even if he is 29 years of ag.
