This week’s Champions League action has brought about a mixed bag of results for the competing Premier League sides.
Manchester United moved a step closer to reaching the Champions League knockout phase as they came from behind to earn a hard-fought 3-2 victory against Braga in Group H.
After falling 2 goals behind early on in the match, United responded with two headers from Javier Hernandez, either side of Jonny Evans close range finish.
Chelsea on the other hand, slumped to a 2-1 defeat versus Shaktar Donetsk. This loss sees Di Matteo’s Blues slip back to mid-table in Group E.
After conceding within the first 5 minutes, Chelsea faced an up-hill struggle from then on. Oscar’s late strike acted simply as a consolation goal with two minutes remaining.
In tonight’s action, Manchester City’s hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages suffered another crushing blow after a deserved loss to Ajax in Amsterdam.
Samir Nasri gave City the lead against the run of play but Siem de Jong equalised with a low finish just before half-time and Niklas Moisander headed Ajax into the lead.
Christian Eriksen sealed the win with a strike deflected in by Gael Clichy. The defeat leaves City bottom of Group D with a single point from three matches.
Arsenal also failed to win at home to Schalke. The Bundesliga side took control of Group B as goals in the final 15 minutes from Klaas Jan-Huntelaar and Ibrahim Afellay gave the Germans a victory their superiority fully deserved.
