Gareth Southgate has come in for criticism for theway he set his side up, using a five-at-the-back system along with two defensive-minded midfielders to begin with.
It was not a terrible display, but one that really did lack imagination and ingenuity.
One player that did not follow that particular script though was Grealish, who was arguably England’s best player along with Harry Kane.
The 25-year-old tried to make things happen and was typically tidy protecting the ball.

His performance caught the attention of one Cesc Fabregas, who said on Twitter: “Great personality Jack Grealish.”
His display was certainly full of that, and perhaps victory might have been possible had others shown the same.

It seems the Villa captain has now proven himself to the manager, and hopefully he can retain his place in the starting XI going forwards.
At his expressive best, Grealish is a frightening player and his hopes of starting at the European Championships next year are certainly looking very promising at present.
