‘Certainly up there’: Rangers boss Gerrard makes bold claim as Ibrox deal is confirmed

Steven Gerrard says Allan McGregor deserves to be considered one of the club’s greatest goalkeepers.

That’s no small compliment given the calibre of previous Rangers custodians, including the likes of Chris Woods, Andy Goram and Stefan Klos.

After weeks of speculation, it was confirmed on Thursday that the 39-year-old has agreed a one-year contract extension.

While many would have retired by his age, McGregor continues to perform at the peak of his powers.

He’s pulled off numerous big saves this season, most notably a stunning stop against Slavia Prague that earned comparisons with Gordon Banks’ iconic stop from Pele.

His impressive form has played a major role in Gerrard’s side shipping just 10 goals in 33 Premiership matches, and it’s no surprise that the manager is delighted to have his number one at the club for their title defence.

As the club confirmed McGregor’s extension on their official website, Gerrard spoke of the player in glowing terms.

He said: “I am delighted to have secured the services of Allan for another season and he has been outstanding for me since I arrived in 2018.

“Some of the saves he has produced have been world class. To be able to continue playing at this level until his late thirties and, hopefully, into his forties, is a magnificent achievement in itself.

“However, being able to consistently perform at the level he has done, has highlighted that he is certainly up there with one of Rangers’ best ever number ones.”
