Cenk Tosun and Theo Walcott highlight why January panic buys would have been unwise from Everton

Everton ended up having a quiet January transfer window. Despite numerous reports linking them with players no deals ever happened. One of those players was Michy Batshuayi, As reported by the Evening Standard, Chelsea wanted £35 million for the player. In the end, he headed to Crystal Palace.

It would have been something of a panic buy from the Toffees after their difficult FA Cup upset to Millwall.

What was clearly evident as Everton lost to Wolves yesterday at Goodison Park was that January signings are a massive risk.

Cenk Tosun and Theo Walcott were both poor for Everton against Wolves yesterday.

Tosun, according to the BBC, cost £27 million from Besiktas. Walcott, according to the Telegraph, cost £20 million from Arsenal. At a combined cost of £47 million, the pair have barely brought any impact to first-team proceedings on Merseyside.

With Everton out of the cups and looking clear of relegation a season of mid-table mediocrity looks likely. Everton are better off waiting until the summer when they can secure long-term targets at a more reasonable price than in the winter.

If Everton ever needed to see justification for steering clear of January panic buys, like Batshuayi would have been, it was made painfully obvious by their duds from last winter yesterday.
