Cengiz Under showed what Arsenal missed out on with Leicester cameo – TBR View

Arsenal lost out last night to a well-drilled and organised Leicester City side, as Cengiz Under and Jamie Vardy came off the bench to combine for the winning goal.

The Foxes managed to contain the Gunners all evening and were rewarded for being brave in attack when Youri Tielemans fed Under, who fired across the area for Jamie Vardy to head into the net.

For Arsenal, it was another case of being close but not quite the finished article. Once again, the signs were there for Mikel Arteta’s men and the way he wants to play, but, ultimately, they looked toothless at times.

And the introduction and impact of Under will have been a particular kick in the teeth for Gunners fans. Back in the summer, the Daily Mail claimed Arsenal wanted to sign the Turkish winger. Of course, no deal ever came about, as Arteta pursued other targets instead.

But with the likes of Nicolas Pepe still struggling for consistency, could Arsenal regret not landing Under in the longer term? It certainly looked that way from the cameo we saw last night.

Direct and decisive

For all the talent Arsenal have in their ranks, sometimes things seem to come across as a bit disjointed. As mentioned, Pepe doesn’t look anywhere near being a £70m player, while Bukayo Saka is still a young man learning his craft.

Obviously, the piece of play from Under was just a glimpse of what he can do. There’s no definitive way of saying whether he will produce that weekly for Leicester or whether he’d have done similar for Arsenal.

However, the way he took his one chance of the game to set Vardy up was everything you want from your wingers. He was direct in running in behind, cool when it came to the delivery, and had the quality to find Vardy when it mattered.

Under’s cameo was maybe a sign of things to come and he might just prove to be one that got away for the Gunners.
