Celtic fans could not have enjoyed a better season. Brendan Rodgers’ all-conquering Celtic side have cemented their status as ‘The Invincibles’ having gone the entire Premiership season without tasting defeat. Not to mention sealing an undefeated domestic season and the treble, after defeating Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup final on Saturday.
Rodgers’ men have written themselves into the history books with their invincible campaign and magnificent achievements as they surpassed multiple records. It goes without saying that fans will be rushing to renew their season tickets in time for next season.
So what records have fallen for Scotland’s Invincibles?
The Hoops made a better start to a season than any football team have done in post-war history, winning 27 of their first 28 matches of the Premiership season.
John Stein’s Celtic side in 1966/67, the season they would become the Lisbon Lions, started their domestic campaign undefeated in their first 28 matches, but Rodgers’ side smashed this record in January and haven’t looked back since.
The last time a team in Scottish football went an entire league season undefeated was in 1899 with Rangers’ 18-game campaign, but that’s nothing on the 39 matches that Celtic have contested this year.
Celtic have also now set a new Scottish top-flight points total record of a whopping 106 points, obliterating Martin O’Neill’s 2001/02 team which managed 103 points. They also better O’Neill’s 01/02 team for most wins in a season, setting a new record of 34.
The current Celtic squad have also eclipsed the 2003/04 Celtic side in their scoring charts. That legendary team which featured John Harston, Henrik Larsson, Bobby Petta and Neil Lennon, scored a total of 105 goals. But Rodgers’ men have managed a total of 106, with Moussa Dembélé scoring 32, Scott Sinclair scoring 25 and Leigh Griffiths scoring 19.
Not to forget winning the treble for the fourth time in club history.
The Hoops’ ability to pull in crowds has also been confirmed as they sit in the top 10 of a list of sides with the highest average attendances throughout season 2016/17.
Figures show that the Celtic support can boast a higher total home league attendance than any side in the top flights in Italy and France. With a massive 1,054,044 total spectators from 19 home Premiership clashes, as well as taking 91,453 to their 19 away Premiership matches.
What can they aim for now?
One thing at the forefront of Rodgers’ mind will be on building a team for the Champions League. To do this he’ll need to bring in a few players, which he’ll probably be thinking about now. Including looking to strengthen Celtic’s centre-back options.
They should also hold on to Dembélé rather than sell him for £25 million. Celtic don’t have to sell, and if they do then fail to reach the Champions League they will have lost £30 million. He could be the difference in the qualifiers.
The most games undefeated overall stands at 62, which was set by Celtic between November 1915 and April 1917, and with the current Celtic squad sitting on 39 games, this could be something for the Bhoys to aim for.
It would be a big task for Rodgers’ men and would take them way into the 2017/18 season, but with the way they are going, you wouldn’t rule it out.
And the big dream in the hearts of every Celtic fan is the 10-in-a-row. Both Celtic and rivals Rangers have managed nine consecutive titles in their history, but now Celtic are desperate to land the perfect 10 at the end of the 2020/21 season. It might not be far away, since they’re already six titles down.
Whilst it’s been argued that O’Neill’s team was the best Celtic side since 1967, Scott Sinclair and co. have produced a season that will go on forever.
