Celtic would need to match transfer record to sign Timothy Castagne and they should

One area of the Celtic team that has needed improvement for some time is right-back. The Bhoys currently have Mikael Lustig in the position. The Swede has been struggling for a number of months and is out of contract at the end of the season. Anthony Ralston, the 20-year-old talent in reserve, has a future at Celtic but another option is still needed.

As reported by the Daily Mail, one player being considered is Belgian international Timothy Castagne. He has been in and out of the Atalanta team this season and Celtic appear ready to capitalise on that

However, Gazzetta Dello Sport reports today, as relayed by Sport Witness, that they will need to pay €10 million (£9 million) in order to do so.

That seems like a lot for Celtic. The fact is, that would match the club’s current transfer record. The Bhoys paid PSG £9 million in the summer to sign striker Odsonne Edouard. That beat the previous record jointly held by Chris Sutton and John Hartson.

But Celtic need to do it. The harsh fact is, Rangers are catching up under Steven Gerrard and Castagne would solve a number of problems.

Not only can the three-cap Belgian international play at his favoured right-back, but he is adept at left-back and on either wing.

Celtic would be bringing in a versatile star for £9 million with plenty of potential resale value. It’s a deal that makes perfect sense.
