Last night saw Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn win big at the club’s end of season award party. The Scottish international picked up both the player’s player and fan’s player of the year award after a stellar first season with the club.

He has provided 10 assists and scored six goals in the Championship this season. Aston Villa are now set to head into the play-offs hoping to secure a return to the Premier League.

His excellent season has been confirmed by this latest recognition. It will certainly have Celtic feeling green with envy.

The Bhoys were desperate to sign McGinn from league rivals Hibernian last summer.

As reported by The Scottish Sun, Celtic had three bids rejected for the player last summer. A £2 million offer was the final one tabled by Celtic for his services. The Edinburgh club valued him at £4 million if selling to a Scottish rival. Aston Villa eventually signed John McGinn for less, a fee reported by the BBC to be in the region of £2.75 million.

Whilst Celtic have had another successful season in Scottish football there is no doubt some of the chasing pack have closed the massive gap between the two sides.

McGinn might have been a perfect option to keep that gap as wide as possible for years to come.
