Celtic wanted Newcastle winger Christian Atsu last summer, now they have their best chance yet of getting him - TBR View
Celtic were strongly linked with a move to bring Ghana international Christian Atsu north of the border last summer. The Hoops were on the lookout for wingers and used the Premier League as a scouting pool – prompting interest in Atsu. Now, the Scottish side probably have their best chance yet of landing the Newcastle United wide man.
Atsu, 29, was afforded just one senior outing by Steve Bruce during the 2020-21 campaign. That is, despite clocking up 121 appearances for Newcastle since initially arriving on loan from Chelsea in 2016. Now, the winger has confirmed his Toon exit – with an emotional Instagram post.
Speed machine Atsu, who has 65 caps for his country, was full of praise for his club’s supporters. He thanked them for making Tyneside feel like home to him – but now, he is on the lookout for a new home. Sports World Ghana claimed last September that Celtic had made an approach for Atsu.
Do Celtic still need Atsu?
Without a doubt. When Celtic sold Scott Sinclair, they did so with little cover. They were expected to add to their options out wide last summer. But other than re-signing Mo Elyounoussi on loan from Southampton, they failed to do so. This summer, they face a similar predicament.
Celtic need additions out wide. Looking at the players currently on the books, only James Forrest and Mikey Johnston are options on the flanks. If they can bring in Atsu on a free this summer, with smaller wages than what he was on at Newcastle, it is a no-brainer.
