Celtic wanted Aberdeen’s Scott McKenna in 2018 and his latest performance would have impressed Neil Lennon

Celtic could only draw with Aberdeen at the weekend after failing to score. The game ended 0-0 at Celtic Park and the Bhoys retained their eight-point gap at the top of the Scottish Premiership.

Despite boasting a strike force of Ollie Burke, Scott Sinclair and James Forrest, Celtic were not able to break down a resolute Aberdeen defence.

Mikey Johnston, Odsonne Edouard and Timothy Weah were all brought on. But these three attackers were also unable to get past the Aberdeen back line.

And one player who was instrumental in helping to keep a clean sheet for the Dons was centre-half Scott McKenna.

The 22-year-old is no stranger to Celtic and he was a transfer target for them in summer 2018 and January 2019, according to a report by The Daily Mail last November.

McKenna has been a key part of Aberdeen’s side all season and he was on top form yesterday in front of new Celtic boss Neil Lennon.

The 8-cap Scotland international is rated as one of the best central defenders in the division and a promising young talent.

It remains feasible that Celtic could re-enter the race for McKenna in the summer transfer window. Filip Benkovic will return to Leicester City after his loan spell and Dedryck Boyata’s contract is due to expire at the end of the season.

There could be a vacancy in central defence and McKenna would be a strong candidate to fill that role after Celtic witnesses his ability firsthand.
