Report: Tottenham open the door for Celtic to loan Victor Wanyama

Celtic have emerged as potential candidates to sign Victor Wanyama after Tottenham opened the door on the Kenyan leaving on loan, according to the Daily Record.

Club Brugge had looked to have won the race to land the combative performer, although that deal seems unlikely to now take place.

The report suggests that Tottenham are keen to offload the player, although allowing him to join Celtic on loan would see them take a substantial hit.

Wanyama is currently paid £65,000-a-week (Spotrac) at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and Celtic would struggle to cover even half of that.

The Daily Record piece also suggests Celtic signing Wanyama is still considered a ‘long shot’ at this stage, given Tottenham’s desire to offload him permanently.

Wanyama is no stranger to Celtic Park. He had two seasons at the club between 2011 and 2013 playing 91 times and scoring 13 goals.

He left to join Southampton for £12.5 million in 2013 (BBC Sport) and has since gone onto Tottenham.

TBR Verdict – Wanyama would represent a real coup for Celtic

In a summer transfer window where Rangers have grabbed the headlines for their recruitment, landing Wanyama would perhaps offer a timely reminder of Celtic’s pulling power.

The Hoops have ten successive league titles on their mind and signing Wanyama would certainly help them over the next 12 months.

Since leaving Celtic in 2011 Wanyama has played 152 times in the Premier League and that sort of experience could prove crucial for Celtic during the course of the season.

Arguably Wanyama would give Celtic a midfielder boasting more quality than anything that Rangers has to offer and he could take Scottish football by storm.

The move does remain a long shot but nonetheless he’d be a quality addition to Neil Lennon’s ranks.
