Celtic have been urged by Mark Wilson to make a move for Lewis Ferguson, a player who was previously with Glasgow Rangers and whose family has heavy Ibrox connections (The Scottish Sun).

Lewis, like uncle Barry and father Derek, was on Rangers’ books, but while the latter two enjoyed illustrious careers at Ibrox, the former was released by the Gers in 2013 and went on to join Hamilton Academical.

The 20-year-old broke into the Accies first team in 2017 and was on the move to Aberdeen a year later, where his career has gone from strength to strength as one of the first names on Derek McInnes’ team sheet.

To date, Ferguson has made 82 appearances for the Dons, registering an impressive 11 goals and 17 assists from midfield in all competitions, while this term he made 38 appearances, scoring three goals and claiming nine assists.

“I know his family is well steeped in Rangers history and the boy himself is a Rangers fan,” Wilson wrote in the Scottish Sun. “Whether or not he would want to go to Celtic, who knows?

“But if you’re talking about furthering your career and a club like Celtic come in for you who could potentially be playing at the top level in the Champions League, then it would take a brave man to turn that down.

“I think his quality is there to see. I think he’s a combative midfielder who can break up play but can also score you goals. And with Scott Brown coming to the tail-end of his career in the next couple of seasons then with Lewis Ferguson… I think he could quite easily take the step up again and I don’t think he’d be a bad signing to fit into that Celtic midfield.”

With Celtic having been top dogs in Scotland for the past nine years and Ferguson one of the brightest young talents in the country, the two linking up wouldn’t be a bad idea in principle.

Of course, with Ferguson being a Bear, allegiances and emotions would surely play their part, but uncle Barry believes his nephew would certainly consider Celtic, as he would any other “big club” (PLZ Soccer).

Given the Ibrox side released him when he was a youngster, he doesn’t owe them anything – he has been carving out his own career and is now one of Scotland’s most promising young players.

That said, if he had a choice between Rangers and Celtic, then in that case you’d think it’s more than likely that he’d go for his boyhood club.
