Celtic surely missed the boat with Atalanta right-back Timothy Castagne as he continues to star for Belgium

In the January transfer window, right-back Timothy Castagne was linked with a move to Celtic, according to Gianluca Di Marzio. Celtic reportedly offered just shy of £9m as they identified Castagne as their long-term replacement for Mikael Lustig.

But his deal failed to materialise and the former Genk defender stayed with Atalanta, who play in Serie A. Celtic instead signed Jeremy Toljan on loan.

Lustig is out of contract at the end of the season and looks unlikely to win a new deal, while Toljan’s loan deal from Borussia Dortmund expires.

Toljan has done little to justify Celtic spending money on him in the summer and therefore a new right-back might be needed.

But Celtic’s hopes of rekindling their interest in Castagne are slim given his impressive form in Italy and on the international stage.

The Belgium international recently starred during the international break, helping his country to victories over Russia and Cyprus.

He picked up an assist for Youri Tielemans against Russia in a banana skin fixture for the Belgian national team and has put forward his case for a regular spot in the starting line-up.

The 23-year-old is also getting regular playing time for Atalanta now and Celtic’s hopes of landing him are looking increasingly unlikely.
