Celtic supporters don’t feel Toljan should have been sent off against Valencia

Celtic already had a mountain to climb when they travelled to Valencia 2-0 down from the first leg and the first-half dismissal of Jeremy Toljan made the task even tougher.

Celtic’s 2-0 first leg defeat against Valencia meant that progression from their Europa League last 32 tie looked a tough ask when they travelled to the Mestalla Stadium for the return last night.

The Bhoys have a notoriously poor record away from home in European competition and the La Liga side knew that scoring once on their own patch would effectively kill the tie.

Not that that stopped Brendan Rodgers sending his side out with the bravery and intent to take the game to their hosts and for much of the first half, Celtic were on top.

But the difference at European level is that small errors can be exploited much more ruthlessly as Jeremy Toljan found out to his cost last night.

Right-back Toljan was already walking a tightrope when he picked up a yellow card after 26 minutes and was sent off 11 minutes later to further add to the scale of the task facing Celtic.

But many Bhoys supporters felt the decision was harsh and took to Twitter to express their frustration on a night where Kevin Gameiro’s goal confirmed their European adventure was over for another season…
