Celtic have been told by two BBC Sportsound pundits that RB Salzburg manager Jesse Marsch would be the perfect appointment for the Scottish champions following Neil Lennon’s exit – and Celtic supporters are in agreement.
Lennon resigned earlier this week, which was announced on Wednesday morning after Rangers went 18 points clear at the top of the table. The pursuit of 10 in a row is in tatters, and numerous off-the-pitch matters have contributed to his exit.
Marsch, 47, has excelled for Salzburg. The former New York Red Bulls manager has deployed an incredibly attacking style that has seen Salzburg shine in European football – producing the likes of Erling Haaland, Takumi Minamino and Dom Szoboszlai.
Sportsound duo Packie Bonner and James McFadden both backed a potential move for Marsch. They believe that his modern-way of thinking would take Celtic forward, especially given the comparisons made between Celtic and Salzburg.
Bonner: “I want to put up Jesse Marsch as a contender. He’s the man for me. Me and James both know this because we’ve listened to him with the Pro License and UEFA, he actually thinks slightly differently.
“Of course, he has the experience now being with Salzburg. He’s got good English, good communication skills, but he thinks outside the box. That’s what I like. He is in a Brendan Rodgers-mould, that’s where I think the club needs to go.
McFadden: “I listened to him on Pro License and looked a bit into him, and he was really impressive. He had a playing career in America, but was manager of New York Red Bulls – then worked under Ralf Rangnick at RB Leipzig.
“Now he is Salzburg manager, look at the model they have – Erling Haaland, Naby Keita. They identify these players, knowing they will sell them on. He was really impressive for me, he would have a real impression and do well at Celtic.”
Marsch masterminded the double in Austria last season, winning both the league and cup and while Salzburg were knocked out of the Champions League earlier this season – they remain in the Europa League, by the skin of their teeth.
If Julian Nagelsmann leaves, it is expected Marsch moves to RB Leipzig. But while Nagelsmann is yet to leave, Celtic supporters have discussed Marsch on Twitter – either in reaction to Bonner and McFadden, or simply hoping Marsch is considered.
I would love to see him with us Paul

I was all in on Marsch earlier in the season, think he's everything we should be looking at. The polar opposite of what we had in Lennon. I had no confidence that Lawwell and Desmond even know who he is.

I'd rather go down the European route. Likes of Salzburg Manager Marsch. He is in fact American.

The only people I will acknowledge as the Celtic manager are Howe, Martinez & Maloney and Jesse Marsch

Stupid headline. Would love Marsch at Celtic. We will get Clarke or Mark Hughes, so more disappointment incoming supporting Celtic.

Well since this is now finally relevant….. A small tweak from earlier
Next Celtic manager in preferential order:
1) Jesse Marsch
2) Eddie Howe
3) Xabi Alonso
4) Steve Clarke
5) Jim Goodwin
Also if we could get Allan Campbell sorted on a pre-contract now that would be swell https://t.co/ejP0i8xaLV
