Filip Benkovic has effectively confirmed he won’t be returning to Celtic for the 2019/20 season.

There had been some hope that Benkovic would return to Parkhead for a second loan spell after becoming something of a fans’ favourite last term.

Rodgers had previously hinted (Daily Record) that a move could happen, but the 21-year-old’s Instagram post effectively rules out him coming back.

He wrote: “It was a huge honour and privilege to wear the Hoops for a season. This club will always be very special to me. Thank you to my team-mates and the fans for everything. Good luck for the future and historic 10 in a row.”

Celtic fans in their hundreds left their well-wishes for the Croatia international, and a number of his former teammates also responded including Mikey Johnston, Ryan Christie and Kieran Tierney.

Benkovic will now be hoping to make his mark in the Foxes first-team, but he has Harry Maguire, Wes Morgan, Jonny Evans, Daniel Amartey and Caglar Soyuncu for competition.

England centre-back Maguire has been heavily linked with a move away from the King Power, which would provide Benkovic with the perfect opportunity to shine.
