Celtic need a defender. Christopher Jullien has been ruled out for the best part of four months, meaning he could be missing for the rest of the 2020-21 campaign – but they can solve that issue with an Aston Villa player.
Jullien picked up the problem during a 3-0 win over Dundee United, being stretchered off the park. Nir Bitton showed he is a midfielder playing in defence against Rangers, getting sent off for a rugby tackle on Alfredo Morelos.
Shane Duffy joined on loan from Brighton but the ex-Everton man simply does not suit Celtic’s style of play, while Kris Ajer continues to be linked with a move away from the club. One centre-back might not be enough.
Back in 2017, Belgian outfit Walfoot claimed that Brendan Rodgers wanted 26-year-old defender Bjorn Engels from Club Brugge – but instead, he swapped his home country for Greece three years ago. Now, he is at Villa.
Last season, Engels did well for Villa in the 19 games he played, but has since been ostracised by Dean Smith. Indeed, Ezri Konsa and Tyrone Mings are first choice while Kortney Hause is first reserve.
Now, according to Voetbalkrant, Belgian trio Anderlecht, Royal Antwerp and Club Brugge are all eyeing a move for the Villa outcast. A ball-playing defender with pace, the 6ft 4in defender is also excellent in the air.
It is claimed that Engels could be allowed to leave Villa on loan – who is without a single appearance this season for his club. Celtic have got to take advantage and beat the interested Belgian parties to land the £9million (Sky) giant.
