Celtic should consider a swoop for ex-defender Adam Matthews

Celtic’s need to sign a right-back in January is well documented, as first-choice option Mikael Lustig has turned into a liability in recent times.

The Bhoys should consider a swoop for Sunderland defender Adam Matthews, who previously played for the club and won four Scottish Premiership titles before departing in 2015.

Matthews has six months remaining on his current deal with Sunderland and Celtic should consider bringing him back to Parkhead on a bargain price given his contract situation.

The 27-year-old right-back has regained his form in League One this season at Parkhead and could help replace Lustig in the starting XI.

He is a right-sided flyer that can be a real threat when pushing forward from full-back, something which has seen him score once and supplying six assists in just 19 games this season.

Matthews is an attack-minded defender that could slot in nicely to Brendan Rodgers’ backline and try to fill a similar role to Kieran Tierney at left-back.

The 14-time capped Wales international previously proved his consistency during his time at Celtic and was a part of the team that famously beat Barcelona 2-1 during the Champions League group stages in 2012.

He is beginning to get back to his best in a Sunderland shirt and he could be an intriguing January target for Celtic.
