The Mexican defender was on the Hoops’ radar back in January, but America Monumental now report the club are ready to make a real go of signing him in the summer, with Dedryck Boyata and Filip Benkovic likely to leave.

Both Internazionale and PSV Eindhoven have also been credited with an interest.

The 20-cap star was last linked with a move to Celtic in December (The Scotsman).

Bold Nicholas claim

Former Celtic striker and Sky Sports pundit Charlie Nicholas has claimed his former club have the better pool of attacking options compared to bitter rivals Rangers.

He reckons the crop of Odsonne Edouard, Leigh Griffiths, Oliver Burke, Timo Weah and Vakoun Issouf Bayo are better than 29-goal Alfredo Morelos, Jermain Defoe and Kyle Lafferty.

Speaking ahead of this weekend’s Old Firm Derby, Nicholas said (via Sky Sports): “I really didn’t think they would be this far in front of Rangers. Celtic have earned the right to bully Rangers.

“Celtic have better options at the end of the day, they have better options up front.”

Tierney blow?

Kieran Tierney has been labelled a doubt for this weekend’s Old Firm Derby.

The full-back missed Scotland’s Euro 2020 qualifiers against Kazakhstan and San Marino with a calf injury over the international break, and Neil Lennon has confirmed he may not recover in time to face Rangers on Saturday.

“Kieran has had a bit of a reaction today and may be a doubt,” he said, as quoted by Sky Sports. “We will have to assess him tomorrow.”

Celtic can open up a 13-point lead at the top of the Premiership with a win at Parkhead.
