Celtic reportedly want teenage talent, who Rangers tried to loan a year ago

The Daily Mail is reporting that Celtic want to bring midfielder Rekeem Harper to the club on a free transfer, with his contract at West Brom ending this summer.

Harper was, reportedly, even present to watch Celtic’s final game of the season against Hearts.

Of course, this news will be of interest to Old Firm rivals Rangers. Not just because of their city rivalry, but because Rangers have also been linked with Harper.

The 19-year-old was, reportedly, on the shortlist for Rangers boss Steven Gerrard last summer. The Express and Star reported that West Brom wanted Ibrox captain James Tavernier. However, Rangers were adamant that any deal involving the Glasgow chief would have to involve Harper heading the other direction, potentially on loan.

In the end, both teams stepped away from negotiations.

Rangers would have been happy to keep Tavernier but Harper must surely be a player Rangers boss Gerrard is fond of.

A move now seems unlikely. Rangers are well stocked in central midfield and Harper would be facing an uphill battle for regular football at Ibrox.

But the Gers will hope he does not go on to become a Celtic hero either.
