Celtic want to make Nicky Hammond their new director of football, according to a report by the Sun.

They report that the former Arsenal goalkeeper is the man the Bhoys want to replace Lee Congerton, who Brendan Rodgers took with him to Leicester City.

Hammond has apparently had roles with English side West Brom and Reading, but has been without a job since the Baggies axed him last summer.

The Englishman was apparently credited with a key role in Reading’s promotion to the Premier League on two occasions, and their struggles in the years since going back down a second time indicate he’s been missed.

Celtic let the transfer window get away from them last summer and cannot let the same thing happen again because Rangers will be doing all they can to close the gap.

In this day and age, it’s ever more important to have an expert behind the scenes taking care of recruitment and that’s especially so in Celtic’s case because they need quality players on a reasonably small budget.

If Hammond does get the job, his priority should be getting in players who can cut the mustard in European football – and ensuring a smoother summer than 12 months ago.
