Celtic reportedly want goalkeeper that Brendan Rodgers labelled 'outstanding' in 2016

Celtic are reportedly in talks to sign Tottenham goalkeeper Joe Hart this summer, and comments from Brendan Rodgers in 2016 will excite fans. The Hoops are in desperate need of a goalkeeper and Hart is the subject of talks. Rodgers labelled Hart ‘outstanding’, while in the Celtic dugout.

Hart, now 34, is in the final 12 months of his contract at Spurs. The North London club, going under a face lift this summer thanks to sporting director Fabio Paratici, have brought in Pierluigi Gollini on loan. It has relegated Hart to battling it out with rookie Alfie Whiteman for third-choice stopper.

Now, Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano claims Celtic are in talks to land the Tottenham star – who is out of contract in June 2022. Speaking just weeks after taking over at Celtic to TalkSPORT in August 2016, Rodgers labelled Hart “outstanding” and suggests his old club Liverpool should sign him.

“Liverpool is a great club. I’m sure it is something that he would look at seriously,” Rodgers said in 2016. “I’ve always rated Joe – I think he is an outstanding ‘keeper. It will be interesting because it’s a great club and if he is to go there then it would be a great move for Joe.”

Is Hart a risk for Celtic – or is he a no-brainer as Rodgers comments suggest?

Given that Hart would likely be one of the club’s top earners, of course, it is a risk. Hart has not been the same goalkeeper since he was ousted by Pep Guardiola at Manchester City. Loans to Torino and West Ham failed to get the best out of him.

He was not even first choice at Burnley and even in the 10 games at Tottenham, he was shaky. What he now needs is to join a club where he is the number one – something he has not had at his last three clubs in Spurs, West Ham and Burnley. He can regain his confidence at Celtic.
