The Scottish Daily Mail (Page 82, 24/07) has claimed that Celtic have checked on FC Basel and Switzerland international Silvan Widmer – and his agent may have just dropped a big hint on Twitter.
Widmer, 26, is a right-back that can also play in the middle of the defence and enjoyed an excellent first campaign at Basel last season, after joining the club from Italian side Udinese for around £5.4million (Blick).
He managed 43 appearances in all competitions last season, and even found the back of the net on two occasions. He also laid on seven assists, and it is that kind of attacking right-back Celtic are after.
It is clear that the Hoops want another right-sided defender, despite the signing of Hatem Abd Elhamed. Now, Widmer’s agent may have just teased fans that his client is about to sign with a post from a Parkhead box last night.
TBR’s view – Widmer would be first choice at Celtic
It is clear to see why Basel paid a whopping £8million for his services last season. The nine-time Switzerland international is proven at Champions League level and is capable of chipping in with goals and assists.
There is no doubt that Widmer would be one of the first names on the team sheet should Celtic sign him. It is likely that a fee would have to be in a similar region to the fee Basel paid a year ago.
But it would be worth it, and it would solve Celtic’s right-back woes for years to come. It may take a lot for Widmer to down tools at Basel, though, who are in their own Champions League qualifying campaign after losing 3-2 to PSV on Tuesday.
