Celtic have reportedly opened talks to sign free agent Steven Fletcher after the veteran striker’s contract at Sheffield Wednesday expired – a move that Rangers coach and Ibrox legend Kevin Thomson suggested in 2018.
Fletcher, 33, has not lost the knack of scoring goals on a regular basis after netting an impressive 13 in 27 Championship outings for Garry Monk’s Wednesday last season. But his contract has expired.
Now a free agent, the 33-time Scotland international is looking for a new home and the Daily Record claim Celtic want to lure him to Parkhead. Initial talks are said to have taken place over a move to land the target man.
It is a move that almost occurred while Fletcher was still at Hibernian, and Thomson told BT Sport – as per the Sun – in 2018 that the Scottish champions should consider a move for the talismanic striker.

“I wonder if Steven Fletcher could potentially be a name that could excite Brendan Rodgers,” Thomson said. “I think he’s a top player, he would score goals. I think the way Celtic play as well, having young legs in midfield now.
“He would certainly give that team a platform. I don’t think he’s going to run in behind now, but he’d certainly link the midfield to front. He’s had a terrific career and I’m pretty sure Brendan will know a lot about Steven Fletcher.”
TBR’s view – Fletcher is just what Celtic need
Celtic need a plan B. A player with experience that has done it down south. Odsonne Edouard remains the club;s first-choice striker and should Fletcher move north, he would hardly expect to overtake the Frenchman.
But if Celtic need to change something up front if they are chasing a game, Fletcher is your man. He offers something different to Patryk Klimala, while Leigh Griffiths and Vakoun Bayo look destined to leave. A no-brainer.
