Celtic legend Davie Hay has called on the club to re-sign winger Patrick Roberts next season in his latest column for the Evening Times.
The 22-year-old enjoyed two good seasons with the Hoops. In 78 games for the club, he bagged 18 goals and registered 26 assists.
The 2018/19 campaign has been nothing short of a disaster for Roberts. His loan spell at Girona has reaped just six starts and one assist in a Copa del Rey contest. The Spanish outfit will also be relegated from La Liga this weekend as they need a mathematical miracle to avoid relegation.
After such an appalling campaign in Spain, next season will be key for Roberts. Hay believes he could be a decent acquisition for Celtic again.
He told the Evening Times: “One man that certainly could and probably should be a consideration for Celtic is Patrick Roberts.
“He did exceptionally well here before and he’s only 22. I think he and James Forrest could possibly play in the same team and switch flanks.
“Whether it would be possible, I don’t know. He is entering the last year of his Manchester City contract, but I bet the player himself would be open to a return.”
Roberts would certainly be a decent signing for Celtic this summer. With Rangers getting stronger, the Hoops must ensure they get it right on the transfer front.
The winger knows all about playing in Scotland and would be capable of an immediate impact. Whether he would fancy taking a backward step, however, is a different story altogether.
The 22-year-old has proved his worth in the Scottish Premiership and after flopping in La Liga he might want to prove a point in the Premier League.
That said, due to not playing much an English top-flight club might not be forthcoming so Celtic could act as the perfect stepping stone for Roberts to reignite his career.
