Celtic’s Europa League hopes hang by a thread following last night’s disappointing 2-0 defeat to Valencia at Celtic Park.

The Hoops weren’t at the races and despite lots of possession they rarely threatened Neto in the visitors’ goal.

Boss Brendan Rodgers must now try and live his side for the return leg at the Mestalla, where his side really must grab the first goal.

Oliver Burke was tasked with leading the line for Celtic last night.

The man tipped recently for a Scotland recall was trusted by Rodgers as the man to bring goals to the Celtic team.

Having endured a failed spell in the Bundesliga with Red Bull Leipzig, this was Burke’s chance to prove a point on the European stage.

Quite simply, things didn’t go to plan and the 21-year-old fluffed his lines.

Eyebrows were raised when the Bundesliga side paid Nottingham Forest £13 million for his services in 2016, according to Sky Sports.

Despite just 31 games at the City Ground, Burke departed for the glitz and glamour of German football.

Things didn’t go according to plan.

Just 26 games later Burke would join West Bromwich Albion, with his Bundesliga dreams in tatters.

Last night was the youngster’s big chance to prove that Leipzig were premature in letting him leave, wrong to not give him more of an opportunity.

Despite playing as a striker, Burke failed to register a single shot on target and was largely underwhelming.

Of course, Burke is still young and relatively raw.

Indeed, he could still prove to be a top star in European football.

Last night proved, however, that he is by no means the finished article.

A move to Celtic will be good for his career and his confidence. Playing against weaker opposition in the league will enhance his confidence.

In terms of proving Leipzig wrong, however, Burke royally fluffed his lines.
