In the summer, Switzerland international defender Fabian Schar was a wanted man. His side Deportivo La Coruna had suffered relegation to the Spanish second-tier and he was, therefore, hoping to find a new club. An impressive World Cup with his nation certainly helped put his name on the radar of several clubs.
One of those teams was, reportedly, Celtic. El Desmarque reported that Celtic had been in touch with the Spanish side over a potential move for the Swiss international.
Celtic were, of course, not alone. That same report also mentioned the likes of Hannover, Lazio and Eintracht Frankfurt.

In the end, it was Newcastle United who snapped him up. As reported by ESPN, the defender joined Newcastle in a £3 million deal in the summer.
Based on his recent form, Celtic will be gutted he did not end up at Parkhead.
Schar, after a settling in period, has become a key player for Newcastle in recent weeks. His man-of-the-match performance in the 3-0 win over Cardiff City at the weekend was perhaps one of the standout Premier League performances of the season so far. It followed his exceptional display against Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup. He is clearly a player that could have helped Celtic, at centre-back or in holding midfield.
At just £3 million, he would have been a bargain.
