Celtic might regret letting Erik Sviatchenko leave this summer after defensive woes

Celtic have certainly not shown the same form they did last term. Brendan Rodgers’ side have struggled to live up to their high expectations. Their form has not been helped by a shortage in particular positions. Centre-back has certainly been a problem for the Bhoys this term.

Dedryck Boyata’s standoff with the club and injury earlier this season had Celtic short in numbers.

With Jozo Simunovic, Marvin Compper and new signing Filip Benkovic also suffering from injuries Jack Hendry and Kristoffer Ajer have spent much of the season in the firing line. Both are young and Celtic have, at times, been found wanting.

It does perhaps raise the question, why did Celtic let Erik Sviatchenko go?

In January, with first-team football in short supply, Celtic allowed the Danish international to join former club FC Midtjylland on loan. He helped them win the Danish title and earned a permanent return in the summer, joining in a reported £1 million deal.

Whilst far from perfect, the 27-year-old has managed to get himself fit and is a star for FCM when available.

Considering the comparable status of the Scottish Premiership and the Superliga, it is fair to say Sviatchenko would have been a useful commodity at Parkhead this season.
