Celtic midfielder Mulumbu was the desperation signing many predicted

Celtic midfielder Youssuf Mulumbu could leave the club this month, having only signed last summer.

The Daily Record reported last week that the 2018 signing from Kilmarnock could depart Parkhead on loan in a bid to get regular minutes elsewhere.

Eyebrows were raised when Mulumbu joined the Hoops.

Many felt that the deal to sign the 31-year-old was a strange one, with a section of supporters branding it an act of desperation as the club struggled to get players in.

Some, however, were optimistic over Mulumbu.

There was a chance he could come in and provide solid cover for the likes of Tom Rogic and Scott Brown.

But Mulumbu has made just three appearances for the club totalling 158 minutes of action.

Mulumbu’s signing has proven to be an act of desperation

With Celtic now reportedly happy to allow Mulumbu to leave the club, it can be concluded that him signing in the first place was a desperate move from the Scottish giants.

Despite impressing last term, he struggled to play week in week out due to injury and fitness problems.

Rodgers’ refusal to use him suggests that he was more a player who was just available at the time, rather than someone he genuinely wanted.

Mulumbu was seemingly an alternative signing to John McGinn who joined Aston Villa, but has found minutes hard to come by due to the emergence of Callum McGregor and Ryan Christie.

The Scottish pair have effectively rendered Mulumbu’s signing pointless.
