Rangers boss once backed Celtic-linked Jordan Ibe to replace Raheem Sterling at Liverpool

Celtic are reportedly trying to add Bournemouth winger Jordan Ibe to their ranks prior to the transfer window closing, according to The Sun.

The Hoops are looking at the 23-year-old to bolster their ranks following their exit from the Champions League earlier this week.

Ibe was once a £15 million signing. That was the fee paid by Bournemouth to take the speedster to the Vitality Stadium in 2016 (BBC Sport).

He has lost his way somewhat and was used as a peripheral figure by Eddie Howe last season.

Ibe can clearly play though. After all, you don’t earn a glowing reference from Steven Gerrard if you haven’t got some ability.

The Rangers boss will probably be interested in any deal which would see Ibe go to Celtic Park. In 2015, whilst still a Liverpool player, he backed the youngster to replace Raheem Sterling at Anfield.

Sterling had departed for Manchester City and Gerrard fancied Ibe to fill the void created by the departure of the £49 million star (BBC Sport).

Gerrard told the Daily Mail: “Ibe’s got tons of ability. I think it’s down to Jordon to grasp that position now Raheem has gone.

“If he can be mentally strong, hungry and want it, the stage is there for him to be a terrific wide-man for Liverpool. He’s certainly got all the tools. I am sure Brendan will give him the same time he gave Raheem and you saw how much he progressed Raheem over the years.”

TBR Verdict – Gerrard put Ibe on a pedestal, now it’s time for him to fulfil his potential

Sterling has developed into one of the most frightening players in the Premier League, whilst Ibe is still desperately craving a regular run of first-team football.

A move to Celtic could be massive for Ibe. Not least because he needs to start showcasing the ability that people, like Gerrard, know he is capable of.

For too long now he has been on the fringes at Bournemouth and the chance for him to play regular football shouldn’t be taken lightly.

He still has enough time in his career to make his mark and Ibe must prove his worth should Celtic secure his signature.
