Celtic fans rue decision not to sign Scotland star after Euro 2020 outing on Tuesday
Scotland bravely exited Euro 2020 on Tuesday with a 3-1 defeat to Croatia at Hampden Park. Callum McGregor’s goal was not enough for Steve Clarke’s man, as Croatia limped into the last 16 thanks to Luka Modric’s strike. Celtic fans rued their club’s decision not to sign Aston Villa’s John McGinn – after his performance for Scotland.
Scotland knew they had to beat Croatia to finish in third place on Tuesday night at Hampden Park. But things got off to a bad start when ex-Everton midfielder Nikola Vlasic opened the scoring for Croatia. A neat finish from around 12 yards out was too much for David Marshall. Scotland came back.
Picking up on a loose ball on the edge of the area, Celtic midfielder Callum McGregor drove on to it. His shot was well-placed, finding the bottom corner – with McGregor choosing precision over power. However, eventually class and experience shone through, as Luka Modric netted.
What have Celtic fans said about Scotland star McGinn?
The veteran scored a brilliant goal to put Croatia 2-1 ahead, before Ivan Perisic got his second goal of the tournament – after opening his account against Czech Republic. It sees Scotland sit bottom of Group with just a point. England go through on top, having beaten Czech Republic 1-0.
Speaking to the Daily Record in 2019, McGinn admits he had his ‘heart set’ on a move to Celtic amid numerous offers from the Hoops. Instead, Aston Villa paid the £2.7million required to get him. Celtic fans discussed that decision on Twitter, after a brilliant display against Croatia.
