Jeremie Frimpong made his Celtic debut in the League Cup and won the sponsors’ man of the match award. Summer signing Frimpong played his first-ever senior game but he did not let the occasion get the better of him.

The young defender made the step up with aplomb, brushing off any nerves and delivering a fine performance. Frimpong is an attack-minded full-back and he showed his defensive and attacking abilities at Parkhead last night.

Celtic signed Frimpong from Manchester City on deadline day in the summer. But the Holland youth international was initially supposed to go and play with the youth team and reserves.

However, a mini-crisis at the back has accelerated Frimpong’s progress. With Greg Taylor cup-tied, Boli Bolingoli rested and Moritz Bauer, Jozo Simunovic, Nir Bitton and Christopher Jullien all injured, Neil Lennon named a makeshift defence.

Right-back Hatem Abd Elhamed moved to centre-back, winger Jonny Hayes played at left-back and youngster Frimpong was promoted to the starting line-up. The 18-year-old made an instant impression, helping Celtic to a 5-0 win and a place in the semi-finals.
