Boli Bolingoli was handed a start by Neil Lennon in the Europa League play-off clash against Swedish side AIK on Thursday night, and the left-back helped Celtic secure a 2-0 lead after the first leg – but Celtic fans are yet to be won over.

The 24-year-old joined Celtic at the start of the summer from Rapid Vienna for a fee believed to be in the region of £3million (Times), as Kieran Tierney left the club to join Premier League hevayweights Arsenal for £25million.

Celtic were demoted to the Europa League qualifying rounds after the Hoops suffered defeat to CFR Cluj in the Champions League earlier this month. Neil Lennon came under massive criticism, with one of the main reasons surrounding Bolingoli.

Lennon had started Bolingoli in all of Celtic’s European outings prior to the clash against Cluj, but opted to bench him in the second leg as the Romanian champions earned a 4-3 win at Parkhead to knock Celtic out at the third hurdle.

The Celtic boss used Callum McGregor at left-back instead of Bolingoli and has since been criticised for that decision. On Thursday night, he reinstated Bolingoli, but the defender hardly impressed – with the Daily Record rating his display at 6/10.

Celtic fans reacted to Bolingoli’s display on Twitter after Lennon decided to bring him and fellow new signing Christopher Jullien into the starting line-up, but the majority of Celtic fans are yet to be convinced by the defender.
