Preston North End manager Alex Neil has ruled himself out of the permanent Celtic job in an interview with the Scottish Sun – and Hoops fans have reacted on Twitter to his comments.

Neil has been mooted as a possible successor to Brendan Rodgers, who joined Leicester City last month. Neil Lennon remains in temporary charge until the end of the season.

Still only 37 years of age, Neil impressed at Hamilton and was given the job at Norwich City. Now at Preston, the Scottish manager is impressing on a tight budget. Preston sit in 12th place, and are only six points off the top six.

Neil was asked if he was considering a move to Celtic at the end of the season. He responded by stating that he has no intention of returning north of the border, despite the lure of either Old Firm side.

“When I was at Norwich I was linked with the Rangers job and now this,” Neil said. “It is rare to be linked with Celtic and Rangers because people like to think you are one or the other.

“I have no thoughts about moving club or anything like that. I am the Preston manager and I am enjoying my time here and we have a lot of scope to improve. Being the boss here has my full focus.”

It remains to be seen if Lennon will remain at Parkhead permanently. With a treble still very much on the cards, many pundits have suggested that if he can win the remaining two trophies, he will get the job.

Celtic fans reacted on Twitter to Neil’s comments, with many stating that they believe he is not good enough – or indeed big enough – for the Hoops job.
