Celtic secured an excellent point away at an impressive Rennes side on Thursday night in their first Europa League outing of the season – but Hoops fans were not impressed with new signing Mohamed Elyounoussi.
A poor mistake from Kris Ajer saw Rennes have the chance to score from the spot, and former Watford and AC Milan striker Mbaye Niang sent Fraser Forster the wrong way to put the French side in the lead.
However, Celtic equalised in the second half through a penalty of their own. Ryan Christie scored from the spot, evading Edouard Mendy’s finger tips by a matter of inches as his left-footed striker nestled in the right-hand side of the net.
A bizarre sending off for striker Vakoun Issouf Bayo came in injury time, as the striker was shown a second yellow card for seemingly making contact with goalkeeper Mendy – who immediately held his face. Replays showed there was no contact.
A good night, though, for Celtic but Southampton loanee Elyounoussi will not be happy on a personal level after a quiet night that saw him struggle to get involved – other than missing an excellent chance for the Scottish champions.
It was the Norway international’s second appearance for Celtic after laying on an assist against Hamilton on the weekend. Indeed, it was clear that the £60,000-a-week (Spotrac) winger was clearly lacking in match sharpness.
He was withdrawn after 57 minutes and replaced by Olivier Ntcham, and Celtic fans are yet to be convinced.
So most of it right except for Bauer (who might have been an improvement – Elhamed not at his best tonight) and Ntcham.
McGregor did well but Ntcham offered more than Elyounoussi. Is the Frenchman better further forward? https://t.co/LbVlFIfHR2

I'm just not seeing it with Elyounoussi. He's on left, in middle, not clicking with Christie, Eddie & especially Bolingoli who is so exposed on left. #RENCEL

Decent enough but need to look after the ball better in final 3rd, Christie and elyounoussi guilty of being a bit careless
Stupid penalty to give away by Ajer
