Sergio Quintero has reportedly claimed that his club Imbabura SC are in talks with Celtic over a move for the highly-rated midfielder – and Celtic fans are keen to see a deal become completed.

Quintero told the Scottish Sun that his club are in talks with Celtic and have been for some weeks, and also stated that if he is to join the Scottish champions a deal must be completed this week.

“The representatives of Celtic have been in talks for some time with the president of Imbabura,” Quintero said. “An agreement has to be reached this week if the transfer is to go through.”

The 20-year-old midfielder has caught the attention of Celtic after shining in the Under-20 World Cup in Poland, with Ecuador finishing in third place – which is well beyond their pre-tournament expectations.

Quintero was one of his country’s best players, and one of the stand-out performers of the tournament. He played the last five of Ecuador’s seven games after being benched for the first two, and even scored in the round of 16.

Celtic could do with additions in the middle of the park. A move for David Turnbull has fallen through, while Neil Lennon has been critical of French star Olivier Ntcham in the public domain, criticising the player’s attitude.

Quintero, then, could be brought in this summer by Celtic and Hoops fans have reacted on Twitter by urging their club to bring the young talent to Parkhead before the deadline.
