Celtic fans hail ‘immense’ Stephen Welsh after AZ Alkmaar victory
Celtic beat Dutch opposition AZ Alkmaar 2-0 on Wednesday night in a European tie – and some of the club’s fans on Twitter picked out their star Stephen Welsh as a standout performer from the game.
The Hoops have a strong two-goal advantage over AZ after winning at Parkhead in the first leg of the Europa League qualifying play-offs.
Ange Postecoglou’s side are closing in on reaching the Europa League group stages, but will need to finish the job next Thursday when they travel to Holland for the second leg.
Kyogo Furuhashi opened the scoring for Celtic in the 12th minute with a superb volley. The summer signing stretched to get on the end of Tom Rogic’s cross.
James Forrest then popped up with a vital second goal just past the hour mark as his deflected shot went in.
The Scottish giants made a rocky start to the 2021/22 season, but it looks like in the past few weeks they are starting to build some real momentum. It will be a huge boost to finish the job in Europe next week.
Stephen Welsh impressing Celtic fans
A selection of Celtic supporters on social media believe that their defender Welsh was impressive at the back.
The 21-year-old centre-half was an imposing figure in defence, which included a superb block in the second period.
A chance has opened up for him to play regularly at the start of this season and he’s seized it with both hands.
