Celtic failed to build on Liel Abada’s first goal for the Hoops on Tuesday night as Danish side FC Midtjylland pegged them back to draw 1-1. In what was a second-round Champions League qualifier, both sides finished with 10 men. Celtic fans, though, were impressed with defender Stephen Welsh.
Ange Postecoglou fielded a somewhat surprising line-up for his first game in charge. A team highlighting his lack of options in defence, Anthony Ralston and Nir Bitton were used alongside Welsh and Greg Taylor. Vasilias Barkas got the nod between the sticks – ahead of Scott Bain.

What have Celtic fans said about Welsh?
While it is was a recognisable midfield, Abada got the nod above James Forrest and Odsonne Edouard kept Albian Ajeti out of the side. It paid off, as Abada scored the opener – tapping home after Ryan Christie had a shot saved. But Bitton got a red card just before the break, for a second yellow.
Anders Dreyer’s dive saw the Israeli defender react, and earn a second yellow. But Dreyer himself was sent off, before Evander curled a free-kick past Barkas. While it was only a 1-1 draw, in a tie without away goals, Celtic fans applauded defender Welsh amid Celtic’s lack of options at the back.
