Celtic crashed out of the Europa League on Thursday night as they suffered a somewhat surprise 3-1 defeat to Danish side FC Copenhagen, losing 4-2 on aggregate – and Celtic fans cannot understand Neil Lennon’s decision to take Mo Elyounoussi off.

The Scottish champions came into the match in a good position, after nabbing a 1-1 draw against Copenhagen in the away leg. That away goal gave Lennon’s side a strong chance of qualifying, but it was not to be.

The game came to life in the second half, after the deadlock was finally broken in the 51st minute. Michael Santos lashed a left-footed effort into the top-right corner of Fraser Forster’s net, from around 10 yards out.

Celtic got an equaliser with 83 minutes on the clock. Odsonne Edouard netted his 26th goal of the season from the penalty spot, after Ragnar Sigurdsson handled. With extra-time looming, Copenhagen snatched a place in the last 16.

Pep Biel and then Dame N’Doye scored within two minutes of eachother, and the scoreline finished 3-1 – 4-2 on aggregate. Leigh Griffiths replaced Southampton loanee Elyounoussi in the 70th minute, despite impressing down the left flank.

Many Celtic fans cannot understand why the Norway international was taken off, instead of James Forrest, as Celtic pushed for an equaliser. Supporters criticised the decision by manager Lennon.
