Celtic departure pays off for Fulham star Stefan Johansen

Fulham won promotion to the Premier League last weekend with a 1-0 win over Aston Villa at Wembley. A single goal from Tom Cairney proved enough for the victory sending the Cottagers back to the top-flight.

For one player it is certainly a form of redemption. Stefan Johansen’s career at Craven Cottage got off to a terrible start last season. Subbed off 32 minutes in to his first appearance, the Norwegian was not used to such indignity at former club Celtic.

Johansen joined Celtic under the guidance of his compatriot Ronny Deila. The pair had previously worked together at Stromsgodset, where they had conquered the Rosenborg dynasty. Voted Celtic’s player of the year in 2015 it was somewhat surprising to see Johansen fall out of favour at Parkhead.

Suddenly, the Norwegian found himself out of the first-team at Celtic. It appeared his contract troubles with the club had seen him become less of a commodity in Glasgow. One substitute appearance since the arrival of Brendan Rodgers signaled the end. Fulham came calling and, despite Rodgers wanting to keep hold of him, the 27-year-old made his move.

At the time it was a massive risk. However, it has become apparent that Johansen made the right choice. Whilst yes, Celtic are winning trophies, in terms of challenging himself Glasgow was no longer the place for him.

The move to Fulham has proved an invigorating experience for the midfield playmaker. Now, after missing out 12 months ago, he heads to the promised land.

Celtic have been fine without him. The club have gone from strength to strength and continue to hold a monopoly over Scottish football. But undoubtedly Johansen would have continued to thrive in Scottish football. Now he will be pleased with the decision to leave Celtic for a new challenge, with Premier League football the reward.
