Celtic will reportedly hold talks with defender Mikael Lustig about the possibility of a new contract.

According to Swedish outlet Fotboll Direkt, the Bhoys are potentially lining up a new deal to extend the rigth-back’s stay at Parkhead.

The 31-year-old’s current deal is due to expire at the end of the season, but it appears like he could get the offer to stick around beyond next summer.

Celtic’s right-back position is certainly a weaker area of the squad right now and they could do with reinforcements moving forward to strengthen the backline.

Lustig definitely has to pull his socks off if he is to remain with the Scottish champions and remain as the first-choice full-back.

The Sweden international has seen his form become inconsistent this campaign and he’s a liability at times that can leave his team exposed.

Lustig has been a loyal servant that has been with the club since 2012 and remains an important member of Brendan Rodgers’ side.

But moving forward he will have to improve displays to convince disgruntled supporters and show why a new contract is a smart move.

Celtic do have 20-year-old Anthony Ralston in their ranks and it may be worth seeing if the youth product can put pressure on Lustig for a starting position in the first team.
