Celtic defender Jozo Simunovic is the latest centre-back to be linked with a summer exit. According to The Sun, La Liga side Deportivo Alaves want Simunovic in a £4m deal.
Alaves finished in mid-table in the Spanish top-flight after threatening to compete for Europe. And now they want defensive reinforcements to push up the table.
Guillermo Maripan is Alaves’ star centre-half but Roma and West Ham want the Chilean, as per The Daily Mail. This has prompted them to look at Simunovic.
But Celtic simply cannot afford to lose Simunovic this summer. Their central defensive ranks have already been raided and they need Simunovic to stay.
The Croatian defender has been paired with Kristoffer Ajer in recent weeks as the Bhoys prepare for next season.
This is because the other two centre-backs in their squad, Dedryck Boyata and Filip Benkovic, are heading for the exit door.
Boyata has already left Celtic and joined Hertha Berlin on a free transfer. Meanwhile, Benkovic will return to Leicester City when his loan deal expires.
Celtic could try to sign Benkovic again next season. But until they learn whether Brendan Rodgers will send him back to Parkhead, they will only have Ajer and Simunovic on their books.
And if Simunovic completes his £4m transfer to Alaves, Celtic could be searching for three new central defenders this summer.
