When Celtic face Valencia this evening in the Europa League they will need to keep a lot of talented players at bay. One such player is Russian winger Denis Cheryshev. One of the breakout stars from his home World Cup last summer, the 28-year-old attacker will be a major threat for the Scottish side.
Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers will certainly be aware of his talents.
Back in 2015, the Bhoys boss was still manager of Liverpool and, as reported by Marca, had the then Real Madrid owned Cheryshev in his ‘sights’.
The Telegraph suggested a £14.9 million move could be on the cards for the player.
But Rafa Benitez, recently appointed as Real Madrid boss, decided to give him a chance at the Bernabeu.
Cheryshev went on to join Villarreal permanently the following summer and is currently at Valencia on loan. The winger is having a fairly average season and missed most of the club’s Champions League campaign with an injury. But he will be hoping to have a better Europa League campaign, starting with Celtic and Rodgers.
Celtic fans will hope they do not see why their boss wanted him in 2015.
