Celtic blow as Mikael Lustig confirms he is a doubt to face Rangers

Mikael Lustig has been quoted by the Record as saying that he is a doubt to face Old Firm rivals Rangers at the end of the month, after the Celtic defender suffered an injury while playing for Sweden.

The 32-year-old defender turned out for Sweden in their first Euro 2020 qualifying match against Romania on Saturday. He spoke of how he is a doubt to take on Norway on Tuesday.

Celtic take on Rangers in just six days time. A Hoops win is all but certain to take the Scottish Champions to eight in a row, while a win for Steven Gerrard’s men could keep their title challenge hanging by a thread.

Lustig was substituted in just the 24th minute of the match. He stated that he was desperate to play against Rangers, but did not say whether he would be fit for the Glasgow derby.

When asked about playing against the Teddy Bears, he told The Record: “It’s a big game that I want to play in, but we will see. First of all, I have to get fit for Norway. That seems far away right now, but you never know.”

TBR’s view

Lustig’s experience in this fixture may have tempted Neil Lennon to start him on Sunday. However, Lustig has been playing second fiddle to January signing Jeremy Toljan.

The Borussia Dortmund loanee has impressed in the early stages under Brendan Rodgers, and then Lennon. But failing to name Lustig even on the bench is a blow, given he can play at right-back or centre-back.

Both sides will want as many of their players to be fit for the must-win match. He joins Rangers midfielder Scott Arfield in stating that he may be unlikely to play in the clash.
