Celtic and Rangers are now close to missing out on Gijs Smal as Feyenoord strike an agreement with the left-back.
That is according to Fabrizio Romano.
So, what is the latest on Gijs Smal for Celtic and Rangers fans to digest? Let’s take a look…
Celtic and Rangers close to missing out on Gijs Smal
Well – according to Dutch news outlet 1908 – Celtic were keen to sign the FC Twente No.5 on a free transfer when his contract expires this summer.
Brendan Rodgers is eyeing a new left-back after allowing Alexandro Bernabei to depart Celtic Park.
A story from Voetbal International in the Netherlands then claimed that Rangers were also interested.
Now, however – according to Romano – Smal is moving elsewhere, with Feyenoord set to secure his signature after he rejected offers from elsewhere.
The reliable Italian journalist wrote on X (previously known as Twitter): “The agreement between Feyenoord and Gijs Smal to join as free agent in the summer is almost done, despite no formal confirmation from player side yet.
“Verbal pact in place and soon time to sign the contract as Smal turned down a proposal from abroad to join Feyenoord.”

Smal has made 20 appearances across all competitions for FC Twente this season, providing one assist while picking up two yellow cards.
Blow for Brendan Rodgers and Philippe Clement
This development comes as a shame for the pair of Scottish giants, as Smal represented a very intriguing market opportunity this summer.
The Dutchman has even been likened to Paolo Maldini in his homeland thanks to some consistently superb defensive displays, picking up the nickname Smaldini.

At the age of just 26, Smal would have represented a long-term option for the left-back position as well.
Nevertheless, it is time for Celtic and Rangers to look elsewhere, with Feyenoord close to securing the defender’s signature.
