Celta Vigo reportedly want Oriol Romeu but Southampton are not willing to sell

Spanish outfit Celta Vigo have made contact with Southampton over signing midfielder Oriol Romeu, according to the Daily Echo.

But they report that the Saints do not want to sell because Ralph Hasenhuttl is reluctant to lose depth in midfield at this stage of the season.

Romeu earns £65,000 per week at Southampton, according to Spotrac, but has not started a Premier League game since November.

The report says that Celta are willing to pay £8.5 million to land the Spaniard, but look likely to be met with a rejection for the same reason Che Adams will apparently remain at St Mary’s this month.

TBR’s View – Romeu just an injury away from a start

Romeu may not be in the starting eleven for the league matches right now but he remains an experienced campaigner.

Losing experience and quality at this stage of the season, with survival still not 100 per cent secured, would represent a risk with Southampton.

If they could get a replacement in – and £8.5 million would be enough to find somebody decent – perhaps the landscape would change.

The fixtures will come thick and fast, and one injury could put Romeu back into the side.
