Cedric Soares has told his pre-Benfica press conference – as per Arsenal’s official website – that Martin Odegaard is settling in well behind the scenes at Arsenal, stating that his ability to speak Spanish has helped him talk to “everyone”.

Odegaard, 22, was handed his first start since moving to Arsenal on loan on Sunday, helping the Gunners beat Leeds 4-2. He started in a three-man attacking midfield along with Emile Smith-Rowe and Bukayo Saka, behind Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

He played well and while he is yet to score or create a goal, the 25-time Norway international is showing signs of improvement and there is plenty of talk surrounding a permanent move. He could start in Rome on Thursday night.

The Gunners take on Benfica in what is officially the away tie, despite it being at the Stadio Olimpico. Odegaard might get another start and Cedric has applauded the way he is communicating off the pitch, and stated he is settling in well.

“He has been excellent. He’s a very nice guy. He’s talking with everyone and speaks lots of Spanish, so he has been talking with everyone. I think all the team is welcoming him very well. He had a good game in the last game, when he started,” Cedric said.

“I think he had a good game. I just have positive things to say about him. He’s a calm person but I think he’s bringing a lot of quality to the squad and he has been excellent. I’m sure he will keep growing as a player. He has a big future ahead of him.”

TBR’s view – Odegaard versatility helps Arsenal

It is a player that every manager loves to have, especially if they are playing 4-2-3-1. Odegaard can play anywhere in that three, and do it well. It means that he can come in for an inconsistent Nicolas Pepe, cover Saka, or play over Smith-Rowe.

Even if he does not start, he is likely to be used from the bench on a regular basis given he can play in three crucial Arteta positions. He is a dream player to have not down to his quality but his ability to produce wherever on the pitch.
