Cascarino says Conor Coady joining Everton on loan is just bizarre

Tony Cascarino has described Conor Coady joining Everton on loan one of the strangest moves in any recent transfer window, telling The Times that it was just bizarre that Wolves let him go.

Coady’s future looked uncertain after the opening weekend of the Premier League season. The centre-back was left on the bench for the trip to Leeds.

Bruno Lage has decided to use a back four this term. And with that, Coady found himself redundant at Molineux. And Everton were the team to capitalise.

The Toffees agreed a season-long loan deal for Coady. It is another coup for Frank Lampard’s men after already landing James Tarkowski on a free transfer.

‘One of the strangest moves of any recent transfer window’

Coady made his debut for Everton at the weekend. And while that game ended in defeat at Aston Villa, it really looks to be an inspired piece of business for the Toffees to land Coady.

Certainly, Cascarino cannot understand what Wolves are doing letting Coady go when he has only moved to Goodison Park on loan.

“Conor Coady leaving Wolves on loan is one of the strangest moves of any recent transfer window,” he told The Times. “I understand if Bruno Lage wants to move from a back three — of which Coady was instrumental — to a back four but to ship out your captain seems a bit extreme, especially in a season of transition.

“I could understand if Wolves had sold Coady to Everton for £10 million or more but to send him out on loan is just bizarre.”

Obviously, Coady looks to be at his best in a back three. But he may take exception with the idea that he cannot work in a back four as well.

The 29-year-old has been a talismanic figure for Wolves over the last seven years. So letting him leave is a certainly a gamble from Lage.

Everton fans will recall how Rafa Benitez let Lucas Digne leave in January. Few Toffees supporters seemed to agree with the decision. And shortly after, Benitez was sacked. So selling Digne became an even greater mistake.

Obviously, there is nothing to suggest that Lage is under pressure right now. But if Wolves do make a change in the early stages of the campaign, any future manager may rue the fact that they do not have Coady in the ranks.
