'Unrecognisable': Jamie Carragher can't believe how good one Newcastle player is this season
Jamie Carragher has been singing the praises of Newcastle United and believes Joelinton is now unrecognisable from the player initially signed.
The big Brazilian struggled to get going as a forward with the Toon and there was talk he’d even be moved on before Eddie Howe took over.
However, Howe has moved Joelinton into a more central midfield role and the results have been quite remarkable from the £40m man. He is now a key player in the middle and playing the best football of his career.
And writing in his regular column for The Telegraph, Jamie Carragher believes Joelinton – along with Miguel Almiron – are vital players for the Toon right now.
“Miguel Almiron is one of the players of the season – he would make my XI at the halfway stage – and Joelinton is unrecognisable since he was being ridiculed as one of the worst Premier League signings,” Carragher said.
Carragher’s praise for Joelinton here marks a full turnaround in opinion on the Brazilian. He was seen, as Carragher says, one of the flop signings of the Premier League era. But under Howe’s guidance and management, he has turned it around.
TBR’s View: Joelinton deserves credit
While Eddie Howe deserves praise for seeing something in Joelinton that hadn’t been seen before, you have to praise the player as well.
Some strikers simply wouldn’t have entertained the idea of moving back into midfield. But Joelinton has done just that and he’s now absolutely vital to this Newcastle side.
Looking back, you can see why Joelinton ticked boxes as a striker. But now, as a midfielder, you can see even more he ticks those boxes. He has everything really as a midfield player and if he carries on as is, then the Champions League could beckon for the Toon Army.
